The Southern 'Schools' class, designed by Richard Maunsell for the Southern Railway, was one of the finest British steam locomotives and operated mainly in Kent and East Sussex on lines with severe restrictions such as the Tonbridge to Hastings and Gillingham to Ramsgate.
